BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — The Central Illinois Flying Aces are set to take part in the 2018 USHL Draft, which begins with the Phase I Draft on Monday, May 7, and continues with the Phase II Draft on Tuesday, May 8.

This year’s USHL Draft marks the Flying Aces’ fifth draft as a member of the USHL and first under Flying Aces General Manager and Head Coach Mike Watt.

The Flying Aces added to their list of picks in the draft through three separate trades on Tuesday. Central Illinois acquired two more fifth-round picks and a sixth-round selection in the 2018 Phase II Draft. Additionally, the Flying Aces also acquired three picks in the 2019 USHL Draft as part of the trades. Read more here.

Draft order:

The Flying Aces have the first overall pick in each of the two phases and will draft first in each successive round, pending any trades involving those picks.

Phase II: Tuesday, May 8 - 10 a.m. (All players eligible for junior hockey, 1998-2002 birth years)

Draft notes

  • Four 2017 Phase I Draft picks played in at least one game for the Flying Aces during the 2017-18 season: Jake Boltmann, Nick Capone, Ilya Usau and Lynden Breen. Breen, a University of Maine commit, posted his first USHL goal in just his second USHL game on March 31 against Green Bay.
  • Through separate trades during the season, Central Illinois acquired four additional first-round picks in the Phase II Draft along with its own first-round selection. The Flying Aces will have the first, fourth, 12th, 13th and 15th overall picks this year.
  • Following the five picks in the first round of Phase II, Central Illinois will wait until the fifth round to select again. However, the Flying Aces have three consecutive picks in the fifth round, with overall selections No. 77, 78 and 79.
  • The 2018 USHL Draft is Central Illinois’ first draft under the Flying Aces identity following the rebrand in August of 2017.

Draft format

The USHL Draft takes place during the first week of May each year and consists of two separate phases, Phase I and Phase II.

Phase I is 10 rounds and teams can select only “Futures” age players, which are U-17 players for next season. The 2018 USHL Phase I Draft is limited to only 2002 birth-year players.

Prior to the Phase I Draft, teams have the option to utilize the USHL’s tender process, which allows teams to sign a player in exchange for a first-round or second-round pick in Phase I. However, that player must be on the respective team’s roster the next season and play in 55 percent of the team’s regular season games.

In Phase II of the draft, USHL teams can select any player born between the years of 1998 and 2002 that is not already protected by another USHL team. During the USHL Phase II Draft, each team will fill its roster to a total of 45 players, which includes players who were previously on a team’s affiliate list. All veteran roster players are automatically protected by their current team until July 10. The amount of players a team will draft depends on the amount of Affiliate players that team has.
